Recent television pictures obtained from the Viking mission portraying lee-wave clouds are discussed, and a comparison is made with terrestrial cases of isolated topography. It is noted that the advent of satellite meteorology in the terrestrial atmosphere has enabled a comparison to be drawn easily between the atmospheres of earth and Mars. Once formed, wave trains on both planets persist for a few hours. It is thought that wavelengths of around 30 km appear on both planets. Much shorter distances between wave crests, however, may be produced in the terrestrial atmosphere, whereas wavelengths excited by large Martian craters may reach 60 km.
