Hypotheses, concerning the evolutionary stage of Be stars of luminosity class 8 to 5, are reviewed and a plan for differentiating the ages of B and Be stars is proposed. HYpotheses are: that the Be stage corresponds to a post main sequence stage of B star evolution; that the Be stage preceeds the nonemission B stage; and that the Be aspect is a temporary variation of the B star, without implying an evolutionary phenomenon. Determinations of proper motions by the Hipparcos satellite and of radial velocities by ground based observations are proposed. Spectral characteristics are to be studied from the ground, as is spatial distribution.
