Methods attempting to determine the mass of Wolf-Rayet progenitors are discussed using recent evolutionary calculations of massive single stars and of massive close binaries and recent data sets of WR stars and OB type stars. It is concluded that the bulk of WR stars should originate from OB type stars with initial mass larger than 30-40 solar masses depending on whether convective core overshooting is included or not in evlutionary computations. Using these minimum values, the WR/WR(progenitor) number ratio within 2.5 kpc from the sun is critically examined and compared with theoretical prediction.
