Consideration of all papers on normal galaxies published in 1986 and 1992 allowed us to perform a multi-aspect comparative analysis of the state of this field of astronomy in Russia and abroad. The results suggest that if countries contributing to this field of astronomy are divided into three groups according to the level of their research-group A (leading), group B (good), group C (others)-then both the USSR and Russia belong to group C although the level of significance of Russian publications in this field has notably increased. The special importance for Russia of the strengthening of international cooperation in these studies is noted. It is emphasized that under the conditions specific to Russia, the most effective way to plan observational programs would be to focus efforts on directions where original Russian theoretical studies are characterized by a very high level, and can provide a basis for specific observational searches for new structures and phenomena.
