A compact model is developed for the global study of the planar rhomboidal four-body problem in a level of constant negative energy, which is a variation of the noncompact model of Delgado and Perez-Chavela (1991) obtained though the blow-up technique of McGehee (1974). It is shown that the two models are equivalent as dynamical systems. However, the compact model makes it possible to obtain results which are not clear in the Delgado and Perez-Chavela model.
