As the astronomy/space science education and public outreach profession continues to expand, is there a need to provide a formalized academic credential? The Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP) feels the time is right for an online master's program in this field. This paper summarizes the discussion from members of the education and public outreach (EPO) community who gathered to explore this topic. Participants were asked for their input regarding possible learning objectives and the desired outcomes for such a degree program.
It is proposed that a master's degree program could serve the emerging population of formal and informal educators, scientists, volunteers and others who are now engaged or wish to engage in astronomy/space science EPO and provide them with the knowledge and skills to be successful. Candidates for the degree could use the pedagogy of inquiry-based learning and technology to create an effective teaching/learning environment.
