A model is presented which can explain the optical pulsations observed recently in SN 1987A, and in particular the sinusoidal modulation of the frequency, by means of the common envelope evolution of a massive supergiant and a low mass main sequence star. It is shown that such an evolution may lead to a binary system containing a rapidly spinning neutron star and a very low mass Jupiter-like companion. Moreover, the model can explain the transition from the red to the blue of the supernova progenitor some 7000 years ago in a natural way. Finally, implications for low mass X-ray binaries and millisecond pulsars are discussed.
