The current status of two ESA studies aimed at assessing the feasibility of developing a spacecraft that can be used for more than one astronomy mission is reviewed. One of the options considered is the development of a 'limited edition common bus' for astrophysical missions. The 'bus' will be used for a small number of similar missions, thus providing for the economy of scale and potentially reducing the overall mission cost. Some technical, programmatic, and management issues related to this project are discussed.
