The implications of the results of the Phobos mission in connection with the solar wind interaction with the atmosphere and ionosphere and the possible intrinsic magnetic field of the planet are discussed briefly. In particular it is suggested that the characteristics of the ionosphere and the amount of magnetic flux in the Martian magnetotail are evidence for the existence of an intrinsic planetary field with a dipole moment of the order of 3 - 7 x 10 to the 21st Gauss cu cm. A hybrid form of magnetosphere is proposed involving captured interplanetary and intrinsic magnetic field and it is noted that reconnection between field lines from these two components could produce the energetic heavy ion fluxes that have been newly discovered in the neutral sheet of the magnetotail.
