Attention is drawn to an error in the formulation used by Sharp (1985) to estimate lower thermospheric atomic oxygen concentrations from molecular oxygen airglow emission rates. The concentrations correctly derived under this formulation are shown to be more than a factor of two larger than those originally presented and, therefore, do not conflict with the large, and allegedly erroneous, concentrations that have been reported on various occasions from direct in-situ techniques.
