Johnston (1967) and Elitzur (1979) have suggested that ambipolar diffusion leads to an anisotropy in the collisions between ions and OH in OH maser regions and results in the population inversion required for the masing phenomena to occur. It is shown here that the frictional forces between ions and neutrals heat the maser regions to high temperatures in this model, and the OH is removed to form H2O on a timescale of months.
