A model for the density distribution of cometary hydrogen was developed for arbitrary observational geometry based on the Keller and Thomas (1975) model. The model takes into account the orbital motion of the comet and the variation of physical parameters with heliocentric distance. Forces which vary over the size of the hydrogen cloud are neglected. The average velocity and age of hydrogen atoms in columns along the line of sight can be calculated, yielding isotachs and isochrones in addition to the Lyman-alpha isophotes. First-order corrections for the solar line profile and for possible geocoronal absorption are applied. Two sample model calculations are interpreted in detail.
