We report the existence of a quadruplet of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays in the combined AGASA-stereo HiRes datasets above 40 and 30 EeV respectively, whose arrival directions are consistent with a point-source origin within the angular resolutions. It is a ``promotion" of a cluster reported earlier by AGASA. The chance probability of a promotion of this quality and other statistical tests of the cluster significance are discussed.
Serendipitously, the cluster is in a region observed by the SDSS DR3. Since the magnetic dispersion within the cluster is small, we infer that the intervening magnetic field is low. Therefore we expect that the line-of-sight to the source should be largely devoid of galaxies and the hot infalling gas associated with galaxy clusters which can support large magnetic fields. The SDSS data reveals that there is indeed a significant deficit of material along the line of sight out to a considerable distance. We quantify just how exceptional this direction is as compared to the SDSS average. We also investigate the astrophysical systems which lie beyond the under-dense foreground, to see what sources are suggested for the UHECRs.
An estimate of the spectrum from the source is given, and used to constrain AGN and GRB models. Implications for the galactic magnetic field and other issues are discussed.
