The nature of the IR sources toward the young stellar cluster NGC 6611 (M16) is investigated by means of their location in various two-color diagrams, and the ambiguities of classification from NIR data are discussed. A strong excess at 1.6 micron, which is typical for cool stellar atmospheres, the variability of some of the sources, and spectroscopy of the brightest object strongly indicate that they are late-type giants. This result puts severe constraints on the stellar content of M16, where only a cluster of O and early B type stars has been found so far. The existence of A, F, and G cluster members can almost be excluded by the present CCD data at R and I. The emission of circumstellar dust is argued to be a reliable tracer for discriminating young stellar objects from cool background sources.
