The Leeds 2.87 sq m cloud-chamber is located at the center of a 7.2 m x 7.2 m array of ten scintillators that trigger the chamber on showers of approximately 100,000 particles whose cores fall within approximately 5 m of the center of the array. Model calculations indicate that even if every nuclearactive collision in an air shower creates a product hadron with high transverse momentum - and thus a sub-core, only one such sub-core would be detected per month by the Leeds apparatus. Model calculations show that interactions of shower hadrons in the roof should cause about 0.2 dense regions of the size observed in the cloud-chamber. Further evidence for atmospheric origin of the observed dense region is its lateral structure, which differs from that of dense regions in the chamber that are products of local interactions. Model calculations show that the roofing above Kiel detectors is probably not sufficient to develop all of the dense regions that they observe.
