A new in situ contact cleaning method for the 3.6-m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope primary mirror has been developed. The basis for evaluating the method is portable instrumentation that measures spectral reflectance and scattered light. The instrument has been evaluated and a cleaning technique developed using specially prepared witness mirrors exposed to the operating environment at the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii. The results of the long-term experiment show that aluminum coatings can be maintained at a near-new reflections level. (SECTION: Astronomical Instrumentation)
