Recent ATCA data have shown, for the first time, blueshifted absorption against the unresolved nucleus of Centaurus A, as well as redshifted absorption much broader than previously known. This challenges the current interpretation of the redshifted absorption as being due to infalling gas clouds close to the nucleus. Obviously, the new data show that the situation is more complicated. In a recent publication we suggest that the nuclear HI absorption is caused by the atomic counterpart of the molecular circumnuclear disk that is seen in CO and H2. The aim of this proposal is to get milliarcsecond-scale resolution HI observations of Centaurus A using LBA in order to further investigate this hypothesis by locating where the nuclear absorption occurs. This will allow to investigate the origin of the absorption and to test the existence of such a circumnuclear HI disk as well as to learn more about the fuelling mechanism of the AGN.
