Accepting that crystal fractionation of basic magma leads to simultaneous increases in the iron ratios ( ) and the albite ratios ( ), a graphical plotting of these two ratios, one against the other, provides a method of denning successive stages of fractionation. By averaging the analyses falling in the different fractionation stages for the two main types of basalt, the Plateau and Tholeiitic, a better chemical definition of these is obtained and of the composition of the Alkaline and Tholeiitic magma series to which they give rise. Preliminary averaging of analyses of basalts from other regions indicates that at comparable stages, some are relatively rich in SiO 2 and can be grouped as tholeiitic basalts and others are poor in SiO 2 and have alkaline basalt characteristics, while yet others have intermediate chemical features. Comparison of averages for different fraotionatipn stages also shows minor chemical differences which are believed characteristic of particular regions.
