An expression in obtained in general form for the self-interaction force of a charged particle moving arbitrarily in the field of an infinitely thin straight cosmic string. The case of a particle at rest is analyzed in detail. In this case, the self-interaction force for a supermassive string may assume arbitrarily large values. A physical interpretation of the results obtained is presented.
