A certain parameter M(asterisk) connecting the positions of Jupiter and an asteroid in a resonance orbit at the initial time is introduced. For a given commensurability with a fixed initial eccentricity the parameter M(asterisk) uniquely determines the evolution of the resonance orbit. It has high temporal stability, which can be used for numerical calculations of the evolution of resonance orbits over long time intervals.
