The phase distance between orbiting bodies is evaluated in order to study the perturbations of the oscillatory elements of periodic comets, and to discover new and to confirm known families of comets. A computer was employed to calculate the mutual phase distance D (known as D-criterion) for all cometary orbits observed to the present, and the change in D over various manifestations of the periodic comets Encke, Halley, Faye and Temple 2 was studied. It was found that for Encke's comet, the phase distance D increased linearly with time and that the rate of increase was 30% higher than the corresponding value of past perturbations of major planets. Some periodic and nonperiodic comet groups were found to have less than 0.3 D while their orbits approached each other at reciprocal nodes within the distance of 0.1 and 0.2 A.U.
