The British Astronomical Association was founded in 1890 at a time when amateur astronomers had been feeling a need to band themselves together for mutual help in observing, and that contact which comes when people with similar interests meet together. Its formation is now seen primarily as the Liverpool Astronomical Society - now happily restored to vigour - and the stimulation offered by letters published in the "English Mechanic".
