We propose to improve the census of low-mass stars and brown dwarfs (M<0.5 M_&sun;) in the Upper Scorpius young association (145 pc, 5 Myr). To do this, we will search for new members of the association by obtaining optical spectra of candidates selected from wide-field optical and near-infrared surveys (2MASS, DENIS, UKIDSS). We will use these spectra to measure spectral types and confirm membership of the targets. A more complete census of Upper Sco will provide a more accurate measurement of its initial mass function. We also will combine our new census with mid-infrared photometry from the WISE mission to measure the disk fraction as a function of mass with better number statistics than was possible from previous pointed observations with Spitzer, which could observe only a small fraction of the stellar population.
