Astronomy's photographic observations, dating back over 100 years, constitute an irreplaceable resource for research where long-term temporal changes have special significance. The AAS Working Group on the Preservation of Astronomical Heritage (WGPAH) is currently working to identify the locations of all plate collections and to assess their present states. To that end, a census of astronomical photographic data in North America is being carried out. A survey has been sent to 182 observatories, astronomy departments and senior astronomers. We present the preliminary results of the census regarding the number and types of plates (images or spectra), dates covered, on-line catalogs, current storage conditions, accessibility for potential researchers, recent usage and plans for the future for extant plate archives. Institutions or individuals holding plates that have yet to participate in the census will be able do do so at the meeting.
