Scientific paper

A standards-based lesson in celestial navigation is presented that integrates basic concepts in mathematics and astronomy. Targeted for use with middle school students in science classes, the lesson utilizes hands-on activities that allow students to discover fundamental concepts in observational astronomy and mathematics. This lesson is a particular example of the lessons developed by pre-service teachers through the Exploring the Earth, Sun and Stars project. Exploring the Earth, Sun and Stars is made possible by a Community of Agile Partners in Education (CAPE) Faculty Incentive Grant through a NASA funding project. Ryan Elwell's travel is supported by an A. J. Palumbo Student Research Grant from Saint Vincent College.
