An analysis of the H2O+ ion emission feature at 6198 Å in the central coma of comet P/Halley obtained by long-slit CCD spectroscopy 13 h after the Giotto encounter indicates the formation of a density maximum in the concentration of H2O+ ions at r ≡ 2×104km from the comet centre. This ion pile up feature is similar to the plasma structures observed by in-situ measurements on Vega and Giotto. The present result thus suggests that such ion pile up effect is most likely of a quasi-stationary nature in this particular time interval.
