Scientific paper
An all-sky catalog of galaxy groups and clusters is presented. Galaxies with corrected total magnitude less than 14.5 are collected from the Third Reference Catalog by de Vaucouleurs et al. (RC3). Most redshifts are taken from RC3 and the rest are from the public version of ZCAT. A friends-of-friends algorithm is adopted. An accurate estimate of the luminosity function is made; the distance is calculated from Hubble law without corrections for infall into Virgo or the Great Attactor. The resulting luminosity function is of the Schechter type, with an excess of both faint and extremely luminous galaxies. Six hundred groups are found by the algorithm, if a spatial link of 0.25 Mpc at 1000 km s-1 (variable with distance) and a velocity link of 350 km s-1 (constant) are adopted. Sixteen groups either coincide with a Hickson compact group or contain a Hickson group in their core.
