The Cassini CIRS FP1 channel is a polarizing interferometer. It covers the spectral range from 10 to 600 cm-1. By rotating the instrument about its optical axis, it is possible to measure the IR polarization of target objects over that spectral range. Previously, CIRS has been used to search for such polarization in Saturn's rings (see S. G. Edgington, et al., this meeting).
Due to the relatively large diameter of the circular FP1 field of view (4 mrad), and the integration time required to obtain a high signal to noise ratio for cold targets, the slow Cassini flyby of Iapetus on 10 September 2007 provides the only opportunity during the mission to make spatially resolved measurements on Saturn's icy satellites.
It is planned to make one nightside and one dayside observation. The nighttime observation is centered at (0, 40), over the eastern end of Cassini Regio. The daytime measurement is centered at (0, 215), overlapping the transition region between high albedo Roncevaux Terra and the western end of Cassini Regio.
Successful measurements should provide information on local slopes and microscopic roughness. We will report on results of these observations.
