The κ Cygnids (KCG, IAU #12) is one of the most fascinating meteoroid streams currently crossed by the Earth. Most years this meteor shower has relatively weak displays, but in occasions produces remarkable outbursts of very bright fireballs exhibiting bright flares [1, 2]. Between Aug. 9 and 21, 2007 the different video and CCD stations of the Spanish Meteor Network (SPMN) recorded an unexpected display of fireballs of this shower as previously reported [3]. Many of these fireballs exhibited extremely bright flares, exhibiting a clear behaviour of catastrophic disruption at the end of their atmospheric paths (Fig. 1). Such flares are produced after the particle's break up, when a large amount of typically sub-micron-sized mineral grains are released, and are almost instantaneously ablated due to the temperatures reached in the thermal front. An interesting point is that such break ups seem characteristic of relatively weak aggregates of cometary origin, and the study of their catastrophic ending points allows estimating the tensile strength of the meteoroids. This abstract is mainly focusing in the strength of these particles, but we will also discuss their dynamics in the solar system deduced from their orbital elements.
