Mars Surface: Maps, Mars Surface: Cartography

The first Russian globe of Mars, on a 1:26 300 000 scale, was presented by the Shternberg State Institute for Astronomy of Moscow State University, in cooperation with the Cartography Association Kartografiya. The globe is a survey model of the Martian surface representing interconnected complexes of global hypsometry, physiography, and morphology. It was prepared on the basis of the images taken by Mariner-9, Viking-1, -2, and Mars-4, -5 spacecraft, maps on a scale of 1:15 000 000 published in the United States, and ground-based observations. Features of the surface of the planet and the entire variety of its topography are displayed on the globe without distortions inherent in maps.
