We propose a campaign to determine the abundances of CO andcotwo , relative to H IIo , in a significant sample ofcomets, both targets of opportunity and periodic comets, overthe next three years to address fundamental issues in thecomposition of cometary nuclei. In particular, we seek toreconcile an analysis based on recent HST and archival IUEdata that suggest that the relative abundance of CO and theoverall activity of a comet are correlated. The relativecotwo abundance does not seem to be similarly correlated.To address the focussed objective, we require only 5 orbitsper comet to obtain the required spectroscopic information.We anticipate that there may be two or three suitablecandidates each year.
