A near-infrared bright, optically invisible nebulosity was recently discovered in a dark cloud at the edge of the optical H II region Sharpless 302. Images at 1-2 μm show a bipolar geometry with two lobes separated by a dark lane, while 3-5 μm images show a nearly point source at the center of the dark lane. The red central object is coincident with the coordinates of IRAS 07299-1651, whose far-infrared spectrum implies a luminosity of 1.3×104 Lsun. 12CO (J=2-1) maps show an outflow orientation consistent with the near-infrared geometry. The presence of a nearly edge-on dust disk is further evidenced by a deep 9.7 μm silicate absorption. I argue that this represents a young massive protostar formed by the impact of the adjacent H II region on the remnant molecular cloud. An intermediate stage is suggested by a small (0.1 pc) cluster of roughly 20 stellar objects near the IRAS source.
