Coherent radar Doppler velocity measurements made with the Scandinavian Twin Auroral Radar Experiment (STARE) were used to estimate ionospheric electric fields, assuming the fluid approximation to be a valid description of the unstable waves in the ionosphere, which give rise to radar aurora. The estimates were made with good time resolution, high spatial resolution, and over a large area. Past work was reexamined in the light of an interpretation of radar Doppler velocity measurements based on STARE-EISCAT velocity comparisons. This interpretation yields more accurate estimates of the ionospheric electric field. This interpretation does not significantly change any past conclusions based on the fluid approximation.
