An account is given of Giotto's encounter with Halley's Comet with emphasis placed on international cooperation, cometary origin/composition, and differences between prior expectations and what was actually observed. Contributions made by VEGA and VEGA 2 are also presented. The nucleus, somewhat larger than expected, turned out to be about 15 km long and banana-like in shape. Two bright patches, each about 3 km in diameter (features initially shown by VEGA 2) gave the impression of a double nucleus. The color of the nucleus, expected to be bright and icy, turned out to be blacker than coal. It is proposed that within this dark exterior ices really are present. Major functional demands placed on the mechanical structure of Giotto are outlined as well as the components which actually comprised its primary and main secondary structures.
