It has been realized that, instead of quasi-linear theory, nonlinear kinetic theory is needed to explain simulations of the transport of cosmic rays (suprathermal charged particles with energy E >> 1 keV) in MHD turbulence consisting of a dominant two-dimensional component and a minor slab component, a popular approximate model of MHD turbulence in the quiet solar wind. A BGK-Boltzmann transport theory approach to nonlinear diffusive cosmic ray transport in combined 2D and slab turbulence is used to clarify and extend a recent highly successful theory for coupled parallel and perpendicular diffusion, the so-called weakly nonlinear theory.
