It is demonstrated by means of a 7-solar-mass stellar model that for more massive AGB stars the concept of the core mass-luminosity relation breaks down if envelope convection is efficient. Instead, the model evolves rapidly to higher luminosities in a short time without a corresponding rapid increase of the stellar core. At the canonical AGB luminosity limit, the stellar core has still only 0.93 solar mass, and the model is further increasing its luminosity at a high rate beyond this limit. The observed high lithium abundances of some AGB stars as well as the luminosity region in which they are found can be explained by the model.
