The 450-micron dust continuum emission from the central 40 x 40 arcsec region of M82 has been mapped, showing that the total mass of gas in the region is about 200 million solar masses. The map is compared to (C-12)O maps of the region. The 450-micron map has one peak, while the (C-12)O map has two distinct peaks. It is suggested that this difference is probably caused by the sensitivity of CO and dust emission to the physical and excitation conditions in molecular clouds. It is concluded that it is not possible for both the (C-12)O emission and sub-mm emission to be reliable tracers of molecular hydrogen in the extreme environments of starburst galaxies.
