The work undertakes a study of the midnight sector aurora, proposing to define the overall auroral patterns in order to use them as a tool to investigate substorms and their differences, to study other (nonsubstorm) auroral conditions and to infer magnetospheric conditions from them. A case study lasting 12 hours at local midnight was carried out on December 9, 1971. For 9 of the 12 hours, the AFGL airborne ionospheric observatory flew near constant local midnight. The DMSP satellite as well as the Isis 2 satellite were in the midnight sector so that the aircraft could intersect multiple successive passes of each. In this way, the aircraft supplied continous viewing which complemented and was complemented by the satellite data. This paper reports important results of the study, particularly those associated with the discrete and continuous E-region auroras and the D-region auroral absorption.
