A 1.5 h^-1^ Mpc radio source has been discovered at a redshift of 0.538. It is identified with an M_R_ ~ -22.2 galaxy with prominent, high- excitation, narrow emission lines. The identification may be associated with a nearby M_R_ ~ -21.4 galaxy. Using multifrequency radio maps, we estimate a source age ~3 x 10^7^ yr, an expansion speed ~0.1 c, a jet power ~1 x 10^37^ W and a density ~0.01 m^-3^ for the gas confining the ends of the source. We argue that the source is large because it has expanded rapidly in a low-density environment rather than because it is anomalously old. We discuss some constraints on the properties of the intergalactic medium that arise from this study.
