A search for broad features in the 8-13 micron spectral region of nine southern emission-line galaxies has with only one possible exception detected a minimum at 9.6 microns in all of the galaxies, including five which have active nuclei. If the minimum is interpreted as due to the absorption by silicate particles in and around the galactic nuclei, the amount of visual extinction implied is much greater than that derived from observations at shorter wavelengths. This effect is understandable, by analogy with galactic H II regions, in terms of the relative locations of the reddening and emitting materials. It is noted, however, that other observations point to differences between the 8-13 micron emission from active and nonactive galactic nuclei, on the one hand, and H II regions on the other.
