The most important performance requirement stipulated for the quaternary pulse-phase modulation ('4PPM') modulator/demodulator developed for ESA's Semiconductor Intersatellite Laser Experiment is that it should be able to operate with any of four bit rates lying between the extremes of 15 and 120 Mbit/sec, using minimal switch-over facilities. It is also required that the demodulator should accept signals that are substantially distorted by the band limitations of the optical receiver front end. While the 4PPM modulator is a single digital circuit, the demodulator consists of four separate units: input section, flash comparator, maximum-likelihood detector, and word-error integrator.
