The techniques and concepts which are essential to performing valid work in 4-geodesy are explored. The discipline seeks to determine mass from observed space or spacetime curvature and to find the curvature from measurements of spacetime intervals. An example is the calculation of the mass(es) of intervening galaxies which form a gravitational lens between the earth and a quasar on the basis of the angle between the two observed images of the quasar. The effects are also used to calculate the masses of planets from the periods and orbits of individual moons. The discussions of the capabilities and the directions which are being taken to formulate a standard body of theory for 4-geodesy make it evident that progress depends on the development of increasingly accurate distance and curvature measurement instruments and techniques. It is suggested that 4-geodesy is best applied to defining the physical characteristics of the galactic halo.
