Several numerical simulations of buoyant 2D and 3D twisted flux ropes have been performed. It is found that the apex region of an anchored 3D flux rope behaves similarly to the simpler case of a 2D horizontal twisted flux tube while the overall structure of such a 3D flux rope developes quite differently. Upon emergence a characteristic S-shape of the magnetic field lines is displayed in agreement with observations in soft X-ray.
