The compact steep-spectrum quasar 3C 43 has a misaligned and asymmetric structure with a remarkable bent jet. It is shown that such an unusually distorted structure cannot easily be explained by the jet being inclined at a small angle to the line of sight. Strong interaction between the jet and dense interstellar medium is a more plausible hypothesis, and may be common in a sub-class of CSS quasars.
