Very-long-baseline (VLB) interferometer observations of the 839-MHz absorption line in the QSO 3C 286 were made. The absorbing region was resolved and is at least 0.02 arcsec across, independent of any continuum brightness distribution model. The observed amplitude and phase spectra were decomposed into amplitude absorption spectra of the two strongest components in the best available model of 3C 286. The line in front of each component is quite narrow, and the line centers are separated by only 3 km/s in velocity. These observations are not inconsistent with absorption by an intervening galaxy, but they eliminate several cases in which the absorption is intrinsic, including photon-driven shells and gravitational redshifts.
