A phase/frequency-locked loop for use in a millimeter-wave radio astronomy receiver is discussed. The system's tunable reference frequency unit, frequency and phase detector unit, and loop filter unit are described. Measured results are reported which demonstrate the practicality of phased-locking a 350 GHz carcinotron to a much lower frequency reference in order to obtain a very high-stability local oscillator signal. The level of stability obtained so far guarantees good operation in radio astronomy receivers for local observations and for nonlocal future applications.
