The (34S/32S) ratios for the three main sulphur containing compounds of the Orgueil meteorite: elemental sulphur, troilite sulphur and sulphate sulphur have been determined. It was found that sulphate sulphur is slightly depleted in34S with respect to elemental sulphur, whereas troilite sulphur is slightly enriched in this isotope. However, a tentative material balance taking into account the various forms of sulphur gives a value of δ34S very close to zero for total sulphur in the Orgueil meteorite. Minor fluctuations´in the isotopic composition seem to exist in both elemental sulphur and sulphate sulphur from one fragment to another. It is shown that the distribution of the sulphur isotopes found for the Orgueil meteorite sulphur compounds would be compatible with the assumption that a uni-directional, low-temperature reaction between elemental sulphur and liquid water has led to the formation of both troilite sulphur and sulphate sulphur or their precursors.
