Using the 20-cm continuum ATCA data recorded as part of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) HI survey carried out by Kim et al (1998) (Project C373), Gaensler et al (2005) obtained rotation measures of unresolved polarized background sources and showed that magnetic field of the LMC is consistent with a coherent axisymmetirc spiral of field strength ~1 microgauss. This experiment is sensitive to spatial scales in the range 1 to 30 . Although this method is a powerful probe of the large-scale structure of magneto-ionic gas and the line-of-sight magnetic field of the LMC, it lacks short spacings. Therefore, it does not provide information on the diffused polarized emission of the galaxy. To remedy this deficiency, and to determine the plane-of-the-sky component of the LMC s magnetic field, we propose to carry out single-dish mapping of the polarized continuum emission from the LMC. With both the field perpendicular and parallel to line-of-sight, the 3-D magnetic field structure of the LMC can be derived.
