The optical counterpart of the X-ray source 2S 0918-549 has been identified on CCD images obtained with the ESO 2.2 m telescope. The object is the only ultraviolet-bright star in the Einstein HRI error circle. Its colors (V = 21.0, B-V = 0.3, U-B = -0.9) and X-ray-to-optical luminosity ratio (Lx/Lopt ≈ 800) are consistent with a slightly reddened low-mass X-binary (LMXB). If located within 15 kpc of the sun, it appears underluminous with respect to other LMXBs. The object does not vary in optical brightness by more than 7% (1σ) over time scales ranging from less than one hour to a year.
