The discovery of 1329-294, a new cataclysmic variable found from a survey of blue objects around the field of the galaxy M83, is reported. Spectra obtained in the region 3200-7000 A show H I and He I lines with a double peak structure superimposed on a flat continuum and a strong Balmer jump in emission. He II lines are not present or are very weak. The H I lines have a FWZI of 3800 km/s and a peak-to-peak separation of 1360 km/s. The blue magnitude is 17.5. This system is of particular interest because it is observed almost edge-on, so that it may be possible to observe eclipses and derive the parameters of the system.
